Starting a family brings with it a range of budget considerations – taking time off or leaving work (mum or dad) and the cost of caring for your new arrival – require some careful consideration before the the Stalk arrives. The Australian Government has a number of initiatives in place for families – here a few pointers to consider:
- Talk to your employer about your paid leave entitlements – for example Maternity Leave, Annual Leave and others you may be entitled to.
- Find out if you are eligible for the Government’s Parental Leave Pay – this supplements leave entitlements from your employer.
- Another consideration is whether you are eligible for a Baby Bonus from Centerlink. Note you cannot receive this and the Parental Leave Pay for the same child. Have a look at the Paid parental leave comparison estimator to assess your options.
- Find out more about other benefits such as the Family Tax Benefit, Child Care Benefit, Parenting Payment etc. For more information click here.
When getting ready to start a family, it is incredibly helpful to have all the information to hand. Do a bit of research now to get your family budget off on the right track.
